For half a century, Dr. Joseph Cohen has embodied compassionate medical care, tireless advocacy, and dedicated leadership for the patients and staff of the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital – 33 years as its Medical Director, and formerly as Chief of Medicine and Director of Oncology Services. An Associate Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine, Dr. Cohen launched several groundbreaking programs including Boston Health Care for the Homeless and the first inpatient HIV/AIDS unit in New England. The recipient of the Manuel Carballo Governor’s Award for Excellence in Public Service, his work has been nationally recognized by the American Cancer Society and the United States Public Health Service.}}

Since 1954, Lemuel Shattuck Hospital has provided comprehensive medical treatment, critical mental health care, and vital social support to highly needy, chronically ill men and women. Though reliant on public funds, this hospital has stood at the forefront of treatment and research for public health challenges, including polio, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, homelessness, and substance abuse. Shattuck Partners enriches patients’ lives and supports the hospital’s mission through initiatives funded by grants and donations. We offer art and music programs; supplement physical and occupational therapy, rehabilitative, and recreational services; and we seek facility amenities.}}
